Autumn - the beginning of the crane season – a spectacle particularly popular with tourists

Loud "trumpets" in the sky let you know the cranes are back. With their arrival you unmistakably become aware that the summer is gone. Cranes come for a stopover from the north across the Baltic Sea in order to "refuel" before flying on to the warmer regions in the south.

The North has been preparing well for the birds considering their food or resting places. During the day the cranes will strengthen from harvested fields. Some take the advantage of searching food in feeding sites created specially for them. During the night they will find peace and protection in the shallow lagoon waters between the peninsula Fischland-Darß- Zingst and the southern lagoon coast. Established observation points allow the crane bird friends to observe them at close range - without disturbing them. At the end of October when food is scarce time has come to migrate on. The cranes gather for their onward destination. And the spectacle is at its best.
