The blue flag (The blue European Flag)

Blaue Europaflagge The Blue Flag (formerly the European Blue Flag) is a global award that can be bestowed to holiday resorts. It assesses the quality of one or more sections of the beach. This environmental label is awarded for one year each. The award made by an independent environmental foundation indicates that the resort meets certain requirements for a prudent environmental management.

criteria for the assessment:
  • beach monitoring by lifeguards
  • compliance with the directive of the European Community waters
  • bathing water quality in the beach section
  • cleanliness of the beaches
  • providing environmental information
  • safety aspects
  • equipment in the port and its surrounding environment
  • adequate waste disposal, special waste and sewage

The Blue Flag is awarded for the quality of:
  • beaches
  • bathing beaches at lakes
  • marinas

When it comes to the quality of bathing water in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, we occupy a place at the top of all Federal States in Germany. The first time the eco-label was awarded, formerly known as the "European Blue Flag", was in 1995.

- Awarding of the "Blue Flag" for marinas on the Baltic coast
 
Current information on the bathing water quality is available at local health departments which work according to the Hygiene Regulation for beaches.

  • Staff controls the beaches during the bathing season (from mid-May to mid-September)
  • Samples are taken every two weeks and analyzed in the National Institute of Hygiene
